THREE University of the Philippines "iskas" and "iskos" (scholars) shared top honors with University of Cambridge students in the elimination round of a prestigious international competition for law students in France last week.

UP students Diane Desierto, Ruben Acebedo and Neil Silva shared top honors with the Cambridge students in the English round of the distinguished Jean Pictet Competition (Concours Pictet) in international humanitarian law held in Mejannes-le-Clap, France, said UP team coach Prof. Harry Roque Jr.

The competition, named after former Red Cross lawyer Jean Pictet who helped create the Geneva Convention, involved a grueling five-day moot court/role playing contest. It was the first time the Philippines took part in the contest.

"(The UP students) were the crowd's favorite. They were heavily applauded during the awarding ceremonies. The crowd loved the Philippine team because we were mabait (kind)," said Roque.

One of the UP students, Diane Desierto, is the daughter of former Ombudsman Aniano Desierto.

"The best thing was that our team matched the Cambridge students, who were already lawyers with many years of experience," Roque said.

He said the Cambridge participants, who came from England and Australia, were lawyers who were working toward their master degrees.

UP College of Law dean Raul Pangalangan said it was an auspicious occasion since it was the first time the Philippines joined the competition. The country was also represented by the Ateneo de Manila University but the Ateneo team failed to make it to the finals.

Roque said contest rules required two winners in the English round of the competition, and the UP and Cambridge teams bested other teams from New York University, Utrecht University, Switzerland's University Centre for International Humanitarian Law, the University of Tbilissi in Georgia, and the National University of Singapore.

UP and Cambridge will meet two schools from Switzerland and Belgium, the two winners in the French round of the competition, for the contest's top prize in July, Roque said.

He said the UP team shined because its members were "well-rounded" in such subjects as international humanitarian law, public international law, human rights and refugee laws.

"They were able to integrate all the laws required by the competition," he said.

Pero kagabi, iba 'yung tingin ko. Nanood kami ni Nico at ng dad niya ng Man on Fire sa Robinsons Galleria. The display of corruption in Mexico in the movie is so blatant and exag. Ang nakakatakot dun, maaaring nangyayari ito sa totoong buhay. Ang mas nakakatakot dun, maaaring nangyayari ito sa totoong buhay dito sa Pilipinas. Hindi talaga malayo sa nangyayari ngayon.

Nakakatawa pa, at the end of the movie may dedication na parang sarcastic. Hehehe... labo.

May sunog kagabi sa may San Roque slum area. Ang laki. We could see it all the way from Ayala Heights to Timog Ave. Maraming pamilya ang ngayon ay na-evacuate temporarily sa covered court ng PhilAm Homes sa West Ave. Kung may mai-do-donate kayong mga goods (clothes, food, etc.), ipagbigay alam ninyo po sa akin. My friend Jason Moss is helping out with the donations.
